bug

fetching three libgci files in wrong directory in
us.archive.ubuntu.com
causes partiatal upgrade failure.

If samba is dependent on perl_426.1 files then this may be the problem.

this system is still in an unstable state.

Hello and thank you for filing this bug report! Did you have any local samba configuration that might indicate what is going wrong? The automatically provided logs do not make it clear if this is a configuration migration issue or where exactly the problem is stemming from.

This is the first time I have tried installing Samba or any LAN for a long while, so bare with me. I want to help and learn this new stuff along the way.

By "local samba configuration that might indicate" are you talking about snb.conf or something beyond that like log files? Where are log files usually kept and can they be opened with Getedit?

[I found recently that some windows log files at least are tokenized. Great for crazy wallpaper, not for meaningful access to the data.]

I'm willing to look where you indicate and supply what I find.

I should add I was having trouble installing Samba on this three computer, two printer home LAN [a Dell printer on a win10 machine scotched the more simple option.].

On this particular Ubuntu machine I had 14.04, and in the middle of this thought perhaps taking advantage of the 16.04 upgrade might improve things.

Should have known better, because it was while the list of changes was flying by is when apt-port poped the Samba error message that opened this bug. [Wish I had the exact wording.]

The upgrade program at the end reported it was aborting because it failed to fetch
Http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/libc/libcgi-pm-perl_4.26-1_all.deb, libcgi-pm-perl_0.77-1build1_amd64.deb, and libcgi-pm-fast-per1_2.10-1_all.deb] and returned Ubuntu to its original state, however that original state was 14.04 not 16.04 which is identified on boot.

I opened bug #1615771 about the failure to fetch three packages from /libcgi-pm-perl/. I have no idea whether they are pertinent to this bug or vice versa.

I'm learning how this site works as well, and just noticed there is a bug attachment list over there on the right. Can I assume they have been read and do not provide any good clues.

Thank you for pursuing this confusing state. If you need both snb.conf files or any screen shots of how Smb4k is set up on this machine or anything else that will clarify things for you please ask.

Hoped I could help by searching the attachments for libcgi, found none,
Only reference to a libc was libcgmanager in these three attachments.
DpkgTerminalLog.txt
DpkgHistoryLog.txt
AptOrdering.txt
I know, I think, that lib stands for library, beyond that, no clue.
