Bug Description
If someone answers my question, I would then click "This Solved My Problem". But I cannot add any additional feedback at the same time.
So instead, while the question status is still in "Answered" state, I enter my feedback message and click "Problem Solved". But the problem is that anyone else looking at this won't know which of the several comments provided is the one that answered my question -- which is the whole reason there is a "This Solved My Problem" button.
So if I then click on the "This Solved My Problem", a second post is generated (and e-mail is sent) with the canned message: "Thanks [answerer], that solved my question.". But the status already was "Solved" -- there was no need to add another post and send out another e-mail.
Confirmed. Michael W. Olson complained about this problem in question 14529: "Heh. It's slightly annoying that Launchpad added that last message automatically."
Surveying the 50 most recently solved questions shows this problem occurred in 12% of them: question 15620 (your question), question 15578, question 15484, question 15481, question 15399, and question 15387.
I suggest this be fixed by making the control for marking a best answer a checkbox, rather than a button -- so that people can mark an answer (or, as in the case of question 15466, two answers) as the best, and give their own thanks, in the same submission. This would also eliminate the problem of Launchpad pretending that the questioner wrote something ("Thanks ___, that solved my question") that they didn't actually write.
