Bug Description

Having run the live 13.04 beta (downloaded 4 Mar, updated 5th) desktop runs *beautifully* on [AMD] nee ATI Caicos [Radeon HD 6450] with system graphics reported as 'Gallium 0.4 on AMD CAICOS', but after install the system hangs at an overscanning (or blank colour) log-on screen. Note: system installed with 'download propriety software'=no.

Properitry drivers then installed via 'safe mode'/reboot but staggers along & nowhere near as smooth as the Live DVD (which was great with all the 3D functionality/workspaces etc working perfectly)

*** note this ubuntu-bug report was generated after restarting in recovery mode***
(because whatever driver was trying to load failed totally at log in screen so I could not run U-B in that mode)

I hope it helps anyway!

f.y.i. I swapped the ATI Caicos [Radeon HD 6450] card for an Nvidea 8500 and all worked beautifully.

=> ATI ~ it's all your fault ;-) (but works just fine on 12.10 so no hardware issues I think)

I hope it gets sorted 'cus on NVidea it all looks brilliant! thank you.

same problem here

graphic card: ATI HD 3200 (RS780M/RS780MN)

daily build from 2013-03-10

boots up with nomodeset or radeon.modeset=0

f.y.i. I think it just got sorted (on my machine anyway) after updating today. Mark as 'fixed'?

Thank you (whoever)

I think the problem has come back again. I did a fresh install post beta 2 (April-07 daily build) on my production partition as my test partition had been running so well (see my comment 2013-03-16). Unfortunately the video diver was then broken again.

Now running OK on proprietry AMD accelerator fglrx (with 'unsupported hardware' flagged on desktop), but if I move back to AMD/ATI wrapper xserver-xorg-video-ati (open source, tested) it breaks again.

Same problem - Radeon Mobility HD 3200. Also boots with radeon.modeset=0, but then loads vesa driver (and doesn't allow, e.g., native screen resolution).

Doug Bates, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
