1002:9452 fglrx graphics broken on upgrade with AMD FireStream 9250

Sean Fitzpatrick, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the following WORKAROUND via https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#WORKAROUND and comment if you can use fglrx-installer in Quantal?

Reassigning to fglrx-installer due to debug information being attached from having reported initially against xorg instead of fglrx-installer.

I tried the workaround, but ran into some problems:
 - in step 5, the command apt-get -y reinstall was not recognised. The "reinstall" seems to be the wrong code. I couldn't recall what the correct command was, so I did this step via synaptic.
 - step 6 failed because there was no package "fglrx-installer". The repository I added in Step 2 didn't have this package, but it did have plain ol' "fglrx", so I tried installing that instead.
 - In the final step (7), the command aticonfig --initial returned
        aticonfig: No supported modules present

Rebooting resulted in the same mess as before, so I purged fglrx again, and rebooted with the open source drivers.

It was. It has just been updated to:
sudo apt-get --reinstall install xserver-xorg-video-intel

This also was incorrect. This has been updated to:
sudo apt-get -y install fglrx

As well, could you also please try the PPA with instead:
sudo apt-get -y install fglrx-updates

I'll try to find some time to give this a try tonight - I've got 500 students waiting to get midterms from me today so I'll be a bit busy! In case it's any help, here are the lines I get from lspci related to the Firestream card:

Sean - are you able to test the Catalyst 12.11 beta driver at http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst1211betadriver.aspx on Ubuntu 12.04?

I could, but probably not until the weekend - I'll need time to do a 12.04 install on this machine (my home computer) and I've got a really busy week at work. (My work computer still has 12.04 - I need a graphics program that depends on qt3 - but no AMD graphics.)

I've installed 12.04, updated it, and tried installing the 12.11 beta driver form the link in #6. In case I did something wrong, here are my steps: 1. Download and extract the file. 2 In the directory of the extracted file, I ran sudo sh file.run
The installer program came up, but it only returns the message "Your graphics adapter is not supported by this driver. Installation will not proceed."
I tried building an Ubuntu package for the driver but that also failed.

I haven't yet tried the workaround in bug #1058040 that involves downgrading X.Org, but it seems like any attempts to run a newer driver on 12.10 fail for me.

With the open-source drivers my previously whisper-quiet desktop computer sounds like a jet engine when playing a video full-screen, so I think I'm going to have to either go back to 12.04 or update my graphics card. (I'd been meaning to do the latter anyway - the firestream card isn't really appropriate for what I use it for.)

Christopher: installing fglrx-updates has the same effect. Graphics are completely shot on rebooting, and I'm unable to run aticonfig --initial or amdconfig --initial successfully as before.
I'm sticking with the open source drivers for now and am looking at swapping out this card for a supported one.

Christopher, is there anything further you might need me to check? I am planning to apply a "workaround" this week of a GeForce 650 I got a good deal on :-) I'll hold off on swapping the cards in case you need me to follow up on anything. I'm not using the Firestream for any GP-GPU computing or any of the heavy number-crunching it's intended for so it's a bit of a silly card to have in my machine anyway.

Unfortunately, I'm currently at an impasse regarding the next step. However, I did bring this bug report to the attention of the Ubuntu X team (maintainers of fglrx-*) as per https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-x/2012-November/001237.html .

At this point, no need exists for you to wait to swap the card out.

This is basically the same as bug 1058040 , so marking duplicate...

Dave Lentz, this report is not the same as bug 1058040 as the scope of 1058040 is HD2000-4000 series cards, and a Firestream 9250 is not a part of that series.

As well, as per AMD, a fix for HD2000-4000 series cards in Ubuntu 12.10+ is not planned, and the newest release available for those cards was provided on 7/24/2012 as per http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/legacy-radeon_linux.aspx .

However, AMD has recently and explicitly provided a beta release for the Firestream 9250 on 12/3/2012 as per http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.11.1&product=2.11.1.3.3&lang=English . However, they did not explicitly note it is covered under 13.1 (which provides Ubuntu 12.10 support).

AMD has been contacted to confirm if the Firestream 9250 is covered under 13.1 or not, and if/when Ubuntu 12.10 support will be available. we are awaiting their response.

"All Workstation products including FireStream have been removed from Catalyst drivers starting 2013. We have a separate driver for Workstation products. I have instructed our web team to make the corrections. For FireStream 9250 you can either install CAT 12.10 or the 8.911.3.4. In terms of Xserver support, please note that this feature has been added to 9.012 drivers and above. So the next Workstation driver will be supporting Xserver 1.13, however the FireStream 9250 will not be supported in 9.012 driver. Cat 12.10 or 8.911.3.4 will be the latest driver for the legacy FireStream 9250."

Marking TrIaged Wishlist as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance as this is a bug "that would only be fixed on a outside-contribution basis" in that AMD would either have to resume support for Firestream 9250 in Catalyst 9.012 drivers and above (where xserver 1.13 is currently supported), or backport 1.13 support to the AMD FirePro™/FireGL™ Unified Driver version 8.911.3.4+.

Thanks for the update. I gave my FireStream to someone interested in doing some GP-GPU computing and bought an NVIDIA card. I'll let them know although I think they're running CentOS (with an older X version).

Quantal is EOL as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases. As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XenialXerus/ReleaseNotes#fglrx fglrx-* is being deprecated going forward for Ubuntu >= 16.04.
