Bug Description

vlc was fine right after installing mint 13 xfce, but after apt-get upgrade, the vlc window isn't rendering properly.

if i pass a stream on the vlc commandline the sound starts right up, just the vlc window is funky. when the vlc window comes to the front, the titlebar and all the menu titles show but the rest of the window is mostly gray. as i pass the mouse over the menu titles, the menu title under the mouse shows, and the rest of the menu titles disappear. if i click on a menu, at first the whole menu displays, then as i move the mouse onto the menu, the one or two items under the mouse show, and the rest go gray.

other windows (eg firefox) are fine. i get the same vlc window problem under quantal.

i split this off from Bug #1071593, that one is a padsp related segfault, this one is the vlc window frozen problem.

see Question #211834, same symptom in quantal. in installing quantal, i installed ubuntu core, then did apt-get --no-install-recommends install lubuntu-desktop. after reinstalling again without --no-install-recommends, the problem was no longer present. this bug was filed earlier, i had installed maya from iso, and then did apt-get --no-install-recommends dist-upgrade. so perhaps this bug would also no longer present if --no-install-recommends is omitted.

Did you try any other Qt4 application? If playback works, then VLC itself should be working just fine...

This is looking like either a display driver problem (using XVideo?) or possibly broken libavcodec (e.g. from Deb Multimedia) installation.

Without further information, there is really nothing we can do.

as per comment#1 i have no problems if i omit --no-install-recommends while installing (it would seem various "recommends" are actually "required")
