loosing network connection on upgrade of network-manager

Bug Description

Just upgraded network-manager to 0.6.4-6ubuntu5 on an i386 box through a remote ssh connection, and network-manager seems to unconfigure my eth0 interface which is set up by /etc/network/interfaces (iface eth0 inet static). I think this is very dangerous behaviour since this move made my machine off-line, no upgrade should make a move like this at least without a big fat warning. Also, at home my AMD64 box lost its IP though it has DHCP configured IP from the wireless router.

Yes, this is an unfortunate problem, but it should only affect people running feisty and is easily fixed with a restart of the networking.

Changed in network-manager:
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected

seems like a duplicate of Bug #92299.

A network restart doed not (always) solve this problem

Well nice, but how can I restart networking, if I'm 100km away from the computer and it shuts its NIC down? :) Seriously, it's not a big deal if it's a single problem of THIS upgrade (since feisty is not stable anyway), however I think it is a very big and dangerous problem if it may occur in the furure as well, when ubuntu 7.04 is released and eg a security upgrade of network-manager come out. My reason of reporting this is the latter case and not the first one, which should be accepted because of usage a distro in development phase.

I have just done a cold reboot on the laptop, after uninistalling network manager. Networking now works . It must be something to do with the network manager with my type of laptop . Did the same upgrade on my main PC and had no problems with network manager - In fact it gives it a more userfriendly system when it works ! Look forward to seeing this work in the future but will keep the network manager uninstalled on laptop until I read/hear otherwise . Would still appreciate some ideas to get my mouse pad working if anyone has a moment please .
