Bug Description

I find it necessary to have development tools synced to the latest, and I would request a version bump to Eclipse 4.2 Juno by quantal. It has special features for mobile development, and that is something which a lot of users will benefit from.

Also, I am a "novice" if you may in terms of filling bugs for version bumps. Do tell me if this is the right way to do it. I checked debian-unstable, and I didnt find that the 4.2 package there yet.

Thanks.

Eclipse JDT 4.3 Kepler has officially been released. The compressed tarball is http://ftp.daum.net/eclipse/technology/epp/downloads/release/kepler/R/eclipse-standard-kepler-R-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz, while master tree can be accessed from http://git.eclipse.org/c/jdt/eclipse.jdt.git .

Using the latest versions, we could benefit from the new features added by contributors.

The so-called Eclipse Team seems dead.

Maybe we should instead ask Eclipse upstream to provide a more Ubuntu-friendly package.

I heard the whole problem is that Eclipse 4.x requires Oracle Java 7. Ubuntu (and especially Debian) don't like Oracle, they are packaged with OpenJDK. I don't know the functional difference, I thought the whole idea was that they were compatible. Anyway, Oracle Java 7 is not in the default repos.

Also I read there were licensing issues with certain parts of Eclipse 4? Not sure. Just repeating what I think I know. :P

Oracle Java is so similar to OpenJDK that it's doubtful there would be any serious hurdles. Besides, Eclipse4.3 is tested on OpenJDK 7 ( see http://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/development/readme_eclipse_4.3.html#TargetOperatingEnvironments ), so it shouldn't be an issue.

The real problem is that Eclipse has a ridiculously complicated build and deployment system that is painful to adapt to Ubuntu, and while there are some provisions for shared-user deployments with a Unixy filesystem layout, in reality upstream never tests them and they don't work very well.

The reason Oracle's JDK is not in the default repos is because Oracle changed the license so that no one else can distribute it [1]. :(

Though, as Rockwalrus mentioned, there should be only minor differences between OpenJDK and Oracle's JDK.

I think a number of user ( / developer! ) need eclipse, and I think that with the right efford, maybe with a bit of analysis and coordination, it could be semplied the ridiculous complicated build system (I do not know the build system, it is just an hypotesis).

Does, and if so, how it could be distribuited the task for having an eclipse packaged for ubuntu/debian?
I guess it is a matter of build machine's configuration and setup for doing test, or does it need external infrastructure to be setted up for running test? Or is it a matter of current infrastructure and standard of ubuntu and the incompatibility with the required (eclise) one?

Sorry, there is neither a wiki, I can not find neither a bug opened in eclise.org, I just found this
http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/kepler/
is not it a starting point?

BTW eclipse 3.8 with nodejs plugin and PDT continuously crash, I can continue to report bugs, but I am near a deadline, I need some sort of usable ide in ubuntu NOW, I am just going to install binary distribuition of eclipse.

In the next month maybe I would experiment with 4.3 build system, but this is not a wishlist, this is a "missing package" bug

Did the build process change between the 3.x series and the 4.x series?

It would be very awesome if we can get a recent version of Eclipse into trusty. Considering that trusty is a LTS and afaik the 3.x series will not be supported that long anymore. There is still a lot of time before feature freeze, so this should be doable.

Hi, I am only a recent junior contributor to pkg-java group (debian-java) and I gonna try to give some info about. The build process is pretty similar between 3.x and 4.x, but it has some dependencies to be updated. It is is based on scripts and patches from eclipse-build project[1][2]

For example Eclipse 4.x needs libswt-4-gtk instead libswt-3-gtk and maybe others updated like jetty8. I spend some days on it and with the help and mentoring of Jakub Adam the package libswt-4-gtk is almost updated.

You can see the latest commits for branch master-4.3 [3].

For build swt-gtk-4.3:

git clone -b master-4.3 --single-branch http://alioth.debian.org/anonscm/git/pkg-java/swt-gtk.git swt-gtk-4.3
cd swt-gtk-4.3
debuild -uc -us -B

For eclipse, at this moment we don't have the master-4.3 [4] branch created, but you can test with master-4.2 [5]

For build eclipse 4.2 and test it is pretty similar:

git clone -b master-4.2 --single-branch https://alioth.debian.org/anonscm/git/pkg-java/eclipse.git eclipse-4.2-master
cd eclipse-4.2-master
debuild -uc -us -B

Also note the debian bugs for Eclipse 4.2 [6], for Eclipse 4.3 [7].

I start to contribute for speed the process and learn about it some weeks ago because I use Eclipse daily for work, if you wanna help like me to get Eclipse updated, the Java Team would be happy to have you join us.

Most coordination occurs on the debian-java list[8] and for more info [9]

Interpreting this as sarcasm. Better point us to a PPA with a working 4.5, or pretty please help working on it.
