Do you know if this issue happened in a previous version of Ubuntu, or is this a new issue?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.4kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

There was no problem with either "Maverick" or "natty".
I have no idea if this problem appeared in "Oneiric" as I skipped over it when I upgraded.

The upstream kernel seems to work fine. I have no problem with restarting or shutting down.

I completely removed fglrx about a month ago. Smooth sailing ever since.

This article helped me a lot: http://linux.koolsolutions.com/2009/08/04/howto-fix-linux-hangfreeze-during-reboots-and-restarts/ Instead of using "reboot=pci", I used "reboot=bios" and I added it to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX instead of GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT

Type in a terminal:
sudo nano /etc/default/grub

find the line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

and change it to:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="reboot=bios"

perform via the terminal:
sudo update-grub

Restart your PC

Hi all,

For what it's worth, I think it's an issue with the Unity shutdown
mechanism, I've had this problem for months on multiple kernels, various
video drivers and have attempted all the suggested workarounds to no avail.
A few months ago I just installed KDE and have not seen the issue since.
Please note,I did not perform a reinstall of Ubuntu, just added KDE to my
existing installation.
