Lauter deadspace

Asked by Axel Nycander

Greetings,
I am attempting to do my first batch ever and it's going to be all grain since there are no malt extracts where I live. This is also my first approach to brewing software. Here is my problem: when filling the field about the lauter deadspace, on the equipment settings, and since I have never brewed a single batch with it yet, can I perform a simple test measuring how much tap water is left behind in the empty cooler? Or must I grind enough grain to reach the amount stated in the recipe, pour it into the cooler filled with HOT water and then measure how much wort is lost in this grain? is this last question more releated to the grain absorption issue anyway? This is what is keeping me away from beggining my brewing experience. Thanks in advance.
Axel

I would just put half a liter (1 qt) for lauter space loss, could easily be more or less, but it won't change that much in your recipe. After your 1st brew you can measure your loss. It is associated with how much liquid you will not be able to get out of your MLT because of your tubing positions or what ever, which is not absorbed by your grain. What is lost in the grain is already calculated with your grain absorption (leave that one on default).

Can you help with this problem?
