Error message with bleachbit 1.2 portable on windows 7 64bit

Asked by name

I can't register for an account at the forums and I don't want to wait until Monday for the admin to make me an account. Hence me posting this in in the bug reporting section instead of the forums.

Tried to wipe free space, got an error message. looked in bleachbit.exe.log and found this:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "bleachbit\GUI.pyo", line 759, in check_online_updates
  File "bleachbit\Update.pyo", line 146, in check_updates
File "urllib2.pyo", line 381, in open
File "urllib2.pyo", line 399, in _open
  File "urllib2.pyo", line 360, in _call_chain
  File "urllib2.pyo", line 1107, in http_open
  File "urllib2.pyo", line 1082, in do_open
URLError: <urlopen error (11004, 'getaddrinfo failed')>

All I want to do is wipe my free space. If bleachbit can't do it, can you recommend something that can?

This is an error checking for updates. It may be caused because of a network outage, firewall, or other network issue.

This error has nothing to do with wiping free disk space.

Asking questions here in Launchpad Answers (which separate from Launchpad bugs) is OK.

An error in Windows or in bleachbit?

How do I fix this so bleachbit will actually wipe free disk space instead of giving this error? Why does bleachbit (the stable build no less) check for updates before wiping free disk space? If these things are unrelated, then why am I getting this error?

In some sense, the error is in both Windows and BleachBit. If you want to manually manage updates, uncheck "check for updates" in the BleachBit preferences. Alternatively, make sure your firewall allows BleachBit to make outgoing network connections.

BleachBit is not giving you the error *instead of*: the error is *in addition to*.

BleachBit is checking for updates on startup because that's what you have in your preferences. The main way in which this is connected to wiping free disk space is that you have to start BleachBit (which triggers the update check) to wipe free disk space.
