The first thing you need to do before installing beryl is to install the proprietary drivers for your graphic card to enable 3D acceleration.

Go to system->Administration->Restricted Drivers Manager
enable the ati proprietary driver and follow the instructions

Reboot

Then if you type "glxinfo" on a terminal, you will have the line "direct rendering: yes"
If you don't have this line, then the 3d drivers is not installed and you should not continue.

Because ATI is not producing quality drivers or giving spec of their graphic cards, it is complicated to install beryl with an ATI card.
you can try the howto on ubuntuforums (dangerous, not supported):
first remove the beryl packages you installed:
sudo apt-get remove beryl beryl-manager
sudo apt-get autoremove
then:
