Can you give me an example of when it'd be useful?

I don't throw all my mp3s in one folder, all the top ones I listen to are kept in a separate group of folders (favourite set). The ones I download or get from my friends are kept in another folder. Then I will go through a process of culling the songs I don't like from the later group.
Eventually moving the songs l like into my favourite set. So having a filter based on folders will allow this process to be done efficiently.

Also the favourite set of folders have sub folders broken into other folders based on the song like slow music etc. Using these folders it's easy to build smart playlists on the various music players in Linux as there seems to be a new one every month.
