Notifications can't be disabled?

Asked by Evan Nelson

Is there a way to disable song notifications? I don't see an option to turn them off in the preferences.

Note that this is on Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity (which means no systray), so if there's a beatbox systray icon that has this option, I can't see it.

There is not a way, but may I ask why you would want to?

Your question catches me off guard. Are you really surprised that people would want the option to disable notifications they don't care about? Rhythmbox has an option to disable notifications, presumably because people wanted that option.

Personally I don't care to see a notification every time a new song comes on. When I'm working, for example, I'll set my entire library to random and just let my music play in the background. I don't want a notification popping up every 3 minutes to tell me that a song has changed, I just want background noise without distraction. I understand why some people want song notifications, but personally I don't. I would be shocked if I was the only person who felt this way.

I agree with Evan: I also prefer to disable notifications, and I think also that choice is better than no choice :)

I don't find it distracting at all. I can work for hours and not even notice a single notification.

However, every once and a while there will be that one song that you can't remember the name of, and in that scenario it is very handy to have a notification instead of having to find the music player and then go back to your work.

For now i am going to leave it be.

Can you help with this problem?
