Backing up with BIT to a network drive

I am currently using BIT to backup to a USB drive but I want to backup on my home office wireless network. I have bought a Western Digital 1TB network drive and plugged it into my router. I can see it in Kubuntu 9.10 but I can't access it. With USB dirves I mount them in fstab, having established a mount point. I have discovered that I haven't a clue how to do this for a network drive. I can establish a mount point of course but then what do I do? If anybody jnows I would be grateful for help.

If you can mount it as a samba share you should look at smbfs.

smbfs is deprecated, use cifs instead

Sorry to be completely ignorant about this but has anybody got any idea how I can use cifs, for example? I looked at http://linux-cifs.samba.org/ but the text is almost meaningless to me. Currently I have a USB drive successfully mounted in /etc/fstab, and I want to similarly mount this 1TB network drive automatically at boot so that I can do my BackInTime backup over the network in the house.

I set up this line in /etc/fstab

//my.ip.add.ress/FishNet /media/fishnet cifs guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

where I obtained the ip address by looking at the drive from Windows. Using the web based admin login for the network dirve I created the folder FishNet. I then created the folder /media/fishnet/BIT_martin (where I will make my BIT backup), and also a similar folder in /fishnet/media but with a different name, for my wife's backup. I am now running a test backup and it seems to be OK.

My subsidiary question is: are the options I am using in the fstab line OK ( guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0)? I took them directly from the second site given above.

Responding again to my own post above. The backup ran and created folders but did not copy files (see output of backintime -b below). Does anybody know what is wrong with the /etc/fstab line?

I guess I am talking to myself here but no problem... I resolved this problem by using nfs instead of cifs. I now have the line

192.168.1.2:/nfs/FishNet /media/FishNet nfs rw,user 0 0

in /etc/fstab and have read and write access on the folder FishNet created on the network drive. Beware, if you do this, that on the WD MyBook World Edition you need to enable nfs, then enable nfs on the drive created, and then enable write access on the drive created. All of these things are in different places on the web interface and you have to dig around to find them (and they are not all mentioned in the manual...). I have a final subsidiary question but I think it merits a new thread.

clue what the guest option means, but I guess it had to do with that. It
looks like only root has write access...

Hi Bart

The network drive is standalone and is sold as accessible by Windows or Mac so I don't know whether this qualifies it to be called a 'windows share' or not - I'm somewhat ignorant about these things! But the drive has the option to enable nfs.

Using cifs seemed to have lots of problems - see output above - that I think (but am unsure) is related to symbolic links. nfs does not seem to have this problem.
