smart remove: removes all old snapshots

Asked by pk72

I started using BiT a few days ago. I had snapshots of Oct. 5th and 6th. When I took another snapshot today, smart remove removed the two older snapshots and left only the newly created snapshot. This is scary.
My settings are:
Older than: off
If free space is less than: off
Smart remove: on
Don't remove named snapshots: off

Hey Philipp,

Sounds scary however it does exactly what it says: it keeps only a snapshot
of today and yesterday, one of last week, one of two weeks ago, one of each
month, and of every year. Because 5 and 6 are before yesterday and still
this week, it removes them all. Do not be afraid: it will always keep the
most recent snapshot (the one it just made).

If you have comments or suggestions about this behaviour, please report it
on

Cheers
Bart

Bart, sorry I don't get this: if it always removes all snapshots but todays, there will never be a snapshot of last week or last month. It is supposed to keep the snapshots that are a week and a month old and so on, but it removes these before they are a week old.
Thanks,
Philipp

Took me a while too, but it does not. An example, you have two snapshots of
5 and 6 October. Today it made another one and removed the ones from 5 and 6
October. Let's say next time you switch on your computer it is Monday next
week. I will not remove the from today, as it is the last one from last
week, so it will keep that one.
If you switch on your computer on Saturday, it will delete the one from
today again. If you then switch it on on Monday, it will keep the one from
Saturday as the one from last week.
So what it actually does, it makes a list of which snapshots it should keep,
and only after making the complete list it throws the rest away.

Hope this explained it a bit!

Cheers
