not configured error

Asked by Ken Beals

backintime runs from command line ok. When daily cron job starts the following is in /var/log/messages:
backintime (root): WARNING: Not configured and the job does not run

I think everything is set up but I must be missing something.

Debian based system (ELive)

thanks.

Did you setup with Gnome or KDE version.
Please check if the file "/root/.config/backintime/config" exists.

I set up using Gnome version (system is Gnome/Enlightenment). You are correct that /root/.config/backintime/config file does not exist. Directory is there but no file. I do have a config file in my /home/user/.config/backintime/. Perhaps just copy it to /root/.config/backintime/?

I use 'gksu backintime-gnome' to run the application as root. On my system this way the config is saved in /root/.config/backintime/config.
If you use sudo, by default it does not change $HOME so the config file will be /home/user/.config/...
When the application run from cron (as root) it will use /root/.config/...
If you want to use the same config you can make a symbolic link from /home/user/.config/backintime to /root/.config/backintime. This way the config will be shared.

I'm sure that's the problem Dan. I added the link and I'll check it tomorrow. Makes perfect sense now that I know what it was looking for. I am the lazy type and opened backintime using the menu entry that it installed. It was labeled (root), but I'll bet you are right that's it's using sudo. Thanks for the help.
