You should not be able to include root ! You should receive an error message !
This was because the application wasn't able to include a folder that contains backup folders.
This problem was solved so I can allow you to include your root. I'll add this to my TODO file.

Starting from the next version you should be able to include root folder.

I'm using 0.9.26, is it correct that root folder inclusion is not working yet? Thx!

And Ubuntu 10.04 still comes with 9.26

According to the bug database there is a commited fix - but no new version that makes use of this fix?

Does this mean that backintime is dead?
