Backing up to a NTFS formatted disk

Asked by RegentLynx

Is it ok to use Back In Time to back up my files to an ntfs formatted portable hard drive?

Will Back In Time restore these files properly to my ext 3 formatted Linux hard drive, or, is it preferable to only back up files to disks which are formatted with the ext3 file system?

Back in Time can backup to (and restore from) ntfs disk but I think it cannot restore original file permissions in most cases.

It is not a Back in Time limitation since it relies on rsync for "all the magic" as Dan says ;-)
And I don't think that is a rsync limitation. It is probably because both filesystems don't have compliant permissions system.

You are right the permission are lost if you use ntfs.
There is another problem about permission: currently on snapshots I remove write flag (to make them read-only) but when I restore items I add write permission to the user only. So the write permission is always lost. I think I'll make an option to switch between read-only snapshots (but write permission lost) and keep permissions.

Permission problems should be fixed in 0.9.24

So it should preserve permissions with NTFS now? I thought NTFS cannot handle linux permissions.

Can you help with this problem?
