How to restore backup on a new machine

Asked by Kim Holder

I am a novice user of Ubuntu. I have just built a new computer, and its name is different than the one on which the backup was made. Backintime isn't recognizing the backup on an external drive I made with it a few days ago.

I have browsed to the config file of the backup - I have to replace the current config with that, right? How do I do that through the terminal?

And then the program will see the backup on the external drive?

Alright, I've now copied the config file from the backup to ~/.config/backintime. I've opened BackInTime and unchecked Auto Host / User / Profile Id and entered the old host and user data from the old system. The program still isn't recognizing the backup - nothing happens when I refresh the backup list, or close and reopen the program.

Please use current BackInTime version from our PPA. I added a 'restore config' function in there. If BIT doesn't find a config it will ask if you would like to restore it. Than you just need to choose the snapshot from which you would like to restore and hit enter.

To use our PPA run:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bit-team/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

If you still can't see your snapshots, make sure the snapshot path is correct. Maybe your external drive is mounted in a different place than on your old machine!?
