Deduplication support on BTRFS

Asked by Tommy

Asking a question. Is there a way to enable support for deduplication (such as in "--reflink=auto" in the gnu `cp` command). As far as I am aware, rsync doesn't provide this. It looks like someone made a patch for rsync back in 2013, but the patch breaks in certain scenarios, and it wasn't merged into the mainline, so you don't get it by simply installing the rsync rpm/deb pkg. Given that rsync doesn't support it, and given that my company is evaluating backintime for use in our enterprise btrfs on san deployment, we'd like to take advantage of the dedup features that btrfs has to offer, without us having to modify backintime or write wrapper scripts around it. Is btrfs dedup support something that backintime could potentially provide?

To be honest, I've no clue ;-)

I never used BTRFS nor cp --reflink before. But I'll have a look as this sounds interesting.
