Witch BIT version do you use? Is backintime-notify installed (run 'dpkg -l | grep backintime')? What exactly doesn't work?
Please run 'notify-send foo bar' from terminal and see if that will show a notification.

I use backintime-gnome 1.0.34-0.1. Running 'notify-send foo bar' does show a notification.

'Enable notifications' is ticked in 'Options', but I don't get any notifications at all from BIT, and it seems to be working perfectly in the background. I assumed there would be notifications when a snapshot has been taken, for example.

Ah, okay. You're using BIT from official Ubuntu repository. backintime-notify is missing in the official repositories. Take a look at https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=735122

You can use our PPA with 'sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bit-team/stable && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade'. There is also a brand new update 1.0.36 in PPA ;-)

BIT will only send notifications if there was an error.
