Done; No backup needed - not true!

Asked by A

Back In Time Version: 1.0.34
ubuntu 12.04
Qt: 4.8.2
KDE Development Platform: 4.13.2
rsync version 3.0.9 protocol version 30

I execute backintime-kde4

This is over ssh as a non-root user.
I can see the directory it creates for BIT on the remote machine, so ssh does not appear to be the problem. The dir is empty.

I've also tried backing up to the same local drive. Same results. No log file is created and so no errors or information.

The one and only clue I can find is: "Profile id not found: 2". This is in fact profile number 2, not the main profile. The main profile gets it's own error because the USB drive it expects is not plugged in.

Running "backintime-kde4 --profile-id 2 -b > /tmp/bit.txt 2>&1" results in the same "Profile id not found:2" error. I should point out, that each time I enter and exit BIT, I have to recreate the second profile, it's not getting saved.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Thank you in advance.

Is this the profile from your other Question 250824? As long as the profile won't pass the buildin tests BIT will not save it. So there is no Profile ID 2 like the error message said.

This is not the same profile. The other Question (250824) refers to running BIT as root. That question is in reference to password/login problems over ssh. I invoke BIT with kdesudo on the other question, I do NOT invoke it that way on this question.

This question pertains to running BIT as a NON-root user (apb). Unless I misunderstand BIT (certainly possible), the two running instances (and the questions) should be completely unrelated, with the exception that all the versions and client and server are the same. I've used totally different profile names for each user.

The other question provided an explicit popup error in the middle of creating the profile - the password error clearly stopped the creation of the profile and so I was forced to cancel in order to exit BIT. Here as a non-root user, no such thing happened. The profile exists. I'm able to select it from the drop down menu.

The other question did NOT have an error regarding creation of the profile (it was merely a side-effect of not being able to access the ssh server). This question DOES have an error about the EXISTANCE of a profile.

I should point out very clearly that when I stated " I can see the directory it creates for BIT on the remote machine, so ssh does not appear to be the problem. The dir is empty. I've also tried backing up to the same local drive. Same results. No log file is created and so no errors or information." BIT acted as if there were no problems or errors - and so got past the point of creating the profile. The profile was created - it persists through exits and restarts of BIT.

In summary:
Other question: user is root, ssh login issue, profile is not created due to ssh login issue. The profile is NOT the issue being addressed.

This question: user is apb, profile IS created. The issue is I get a status message that states "Done; No backup needed", when in fact no backup exists. ssh does not appear to be the problem (although anything is possible).

As I was just now attempting to confirm where the error message "Profile id not found: 2" came from (I think it was in the terminal), the problem managed to resolve itself. Both local storage and ssh did backups succesfully (albeit one simple test file).

I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that it has now long since passed midnight since I first attempted this (or perhaps more than 24 hours later - not sure about the timing as I didn't make a note).

For now it's working. We'll see if I stumble onto it again at some point down the road.

Okay, sorry for mixing this up. Glad to hear it is now working for you.
Please report again if this happen again. Maybe there was an error in the config file which got solved after starting and closing BIT again.

I had a similar problem for my first backup.
At the first time, I was using the Gnome version and i had this issue.
And now I am running the Qt one (both of them are the last version from PPA) and it's works !

There are differences between the two versions, regardless of the GUI ?

The Gnome/KDE versions are from 1.0 series. With 1.1 I ditched Gnome GUI to make it easier to maintain and extend BIT. So the Qt GUI is the successor of KDE GUI. Beside of this there where lots of other improvements and fixes, too. Take a look at http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~bit-team/backintime/trunk/view/head:/CHANGES

The 'Done; No backup needed' message is (at the moment) more like an educated guess of BIT. And if something else goes wrong further up in the chain this guess will fail. I'm planing to change this by adding a proper interprocess communication, but that's quite a lot of work to do.

Can you help with this problem?
