How to back up ".thunderbird"

Asked by Helmut Schulz

I started to use BiT just today, used simple Copy Paste commands on folders up to now.

The list of folders in BiT where I can include folders does not list the hidden folders such as .thunderbird,
but I would like to include the profiles of Firefox, Thunderbird in the backups.

How can I make the hidden files visible on the first display of BiT?

You can right-click inside the dialog and activate 'Show Hidden Files' (could be named different if you use KDE)

I am using BiT 1.0.34 on Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 32 bit

Right-clicking in the Back In Time box does not produce any context menu so I could choose to display hidden files
as I am used to when working with Copy Paste.

Let me state exactly where I am:

Highlighted in green are the following fields:

Left column: NOW
Middle column: Home
Right column: First folder on the Home list. Only in this list are context menus with the items: Open and Snapshots

You are talking about the main window. There you could enable hidden files with the 'Show Hidden Files' button in second Toolbar (between the address and the restore-button).

If you want to include a hidden file you need to go to Settings > Include > Add Folder > right-click > Show Hidden Files

Thanks very much for patience and help.
It worked, the .dot files are now included.

I want to do something similar but I want to add all the .config file from the user home folder, not only the current one but also the future one.

Can this be done? If it can be done, how is this possible? I'm thinking it would be like an include pattern (which momentary can't be done).

Hi Paul,

do you only want to include all files in /home/USER/.config? This can be done exactly like above. Settings > Include > Add Folder > right-click > Show Hidden Files > choose .config

Or do you want to include all hidden files in /home/USER/? For this please take a look at my answer #3 in Question #261763. Include pattern are not (yet) possible. But you can exclude all normal files with '/home/*/[!.]*'

Germar

Thank you Germar

It works fine as you suggested and also it seems that I still can include other folders from /home, so it seems that the order in which are executed the rules are first the Include rules and then the exclude rules. Am I right?

Please take a look at the snapshot log to find the rsync command which was used.

This is in-/exclude order:
1. exclude some hardcoded folders
2. include every single folder up to your selected files/folder
3. exclude users excludes
4. include selected files or all files/subfolders in included folders
5. exclude *
