restore button is greyed out..how to restore?

Asked by dduran1210

I backed up my desktop, downloads & documents before my computer crashed. I re-installed ZorinOS and I
went to my Dee\Zorin backup folder. I have 7 difftar.gz files. 2 appear NOT to be faded out. I see the restore
button on the menu but it is greyed out or faded. I rightclick on the tar.gz files and do NOT get a restore option.

how do i restore these files? I can drill down with the file manager to see *.desktop extensions on the folders & files.

any help would sure be appreciated.

Are you sure you made your backup with BackInTime? I'm just asking because we don't have any difftar.gz in BIT. This sounds more like duplicity or rsnapshot.

ok, i had 2 folders...was looking at the wrong one, i guess. the other one which i cannot recover, has two folders in it:

1. /media/dave/dee/linux backups/backintime/LINUX/dave/1/20140306-124841-923
2. /media/dave/dee/linux backups/backintime/LINUX/dave/1/last_snapshot

when i right click, i get either "open" or "snapshot".....the recover icon on the menu above is faded out.

The Recover icon is grayed out because you have selected 'Now' in left hand Snapshots list. Which is actually no snapshot but the current view of your HDD.

If you don't see any other snapshots in that Snapshot list you need to fix your config so BackInTime can find your old snapshots again. Most times this is because your hostname (LINUX) or username (dave) has changed after you reinstalled your system. You can deactivate 'Auto Host/User/ProfileID' in Settings>General below Advance and change Host and User to 'LINUX' and 'dave'.

Now you should see at least one more snapshot 2014-03-06 in left hand list. Choose that one and the Restore button should light up again.
