Is it possible to copy and edit a configuration file for a profile?

Asked by Benedikt Schäfer

Back In Time 1.0.10

Hi there,

my challenge is this: I have one profile that backs up a number of folders to external hard drive A.

I would like to modify this profile and save it as a second configuration profile for backups to external hard drive B.

Is it possible to edit a configuration for a profile as a text document so that I do not have to add or remove every folder by hand, one at a time?

Best regards, Ben

Sure. You can find the config in '~/.config/backintime/config' or '/root/.config/backintime/config' if you run BIT as root. This is a normal text file. Just copy all lines starting with 'profile1.' and change them to 'profile2.[...]'. Then add 'profile2.name=foobar' and change 'profiles=1:2'. Make sure 'profile2.snapshots.path.auto' is 'true' or if not change 'profile2.snapshots.path.profile=2'. Start BackInTime, open Settings and switch to your new profile. Then change 'Where to save snapshots' to your second hdd.

For further information on config file you can download http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~bit-team/backintime/trunk/download/germar-20140112193940-6ghxk5ma5ca5nyt5/backintimeconfig.1-20130702044947-n6fso85x7jheywne-2/backintime-config.1 and view the manpage with 'man ~/Downloads/backintime-config.1'

Hi Germar,
a new button like "Clone" or "Copy to new profile" or "Save As..." beside "Edit", "Add" and "Remove" in the Settings dialog would be a nice enhancement, anyway.

Can you help with this problem?
