Find snapshot to restore /home/user on new machine

Asked by jtd

I made a snapshot using BIT (root) GUI of my /home/user folder and nothing else. I reinstalled Ubuntu on new machine and want to restore that snapshot so my /home/user folder looks identical to old machine. However, I cannot locate the BIT Snapshot through the BIT (root) GUI or BIT (user) GUI. Why doesn't BIT automatically load my Snapshot?

My /media/USER/drive/backintime/HOST/USER/1/20131121-221500-123/config file does not exist (not sure if this is BIT's error or mine in the original backup?).

Following here (https://answers.launchpad.net/backintime/+faq/2456), I have opened 'Settings', disabled 'Auto Host / User / Profile Id' and changed 'Host' and 'User' entry so they match my new machine, i.e., I changed Host from Old_Host to New_Host so it matched my new machine. No go.

I have tried copying /home/user from BIT (root) GUI and BIT (user) GUI to my new machine (right-click > Copy; open sudo nautilus > Paste), but I end up with file user:group as root:root and with file permissions of 600 instead of 655 or 755.

I want to use my BIT Snapshot as that seems most likely to maintain permissions and do a "Restore" the way I understand it, but how?

---Should I manually edit my current config file (/root/.config/backintime/config; or ~/.config/backintime/config)? If so, what parts and in what ways?

---Did I go wrong by taking a snapshot with BIT (root) instead of BIT (user)?

---How can I find my snapshots?

Many thanks!!

ANSWER:
Go to
<SNAPSHOTS FOLDER>/backintime/<Old_HOST>
and rename the Old_HOST to New_HOST.

Make sure Settings > General > "Where to save snapshots" matches your original Snapshot (i.e. points to /media/USER/drive as in /media/USER/drive/backintime/HOST/USER/1/20131121-221500-123)

Settings > General > Auto Host is also checked.

I now see my original Snapshot!
