keep incremental backup after the source path has changed

Asked by A Krajcsi

Hi,

My source path has changed: I backup my flash drive, but due to changes in udisks it is automounted to a different path. I'd like to keep the previous backup and use incremental method instead of starting a new backup. Symlink from the new path to the old path does not work, because Copy link options are disabled (there are symlinks on my flash drive). Is there any other way to keep incremental backup?

Thanks

You can open Settings in Backintime and change the path in 'Where to save snapshots' to your new destination.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply.

I'm not sure if this setting would solve my problem. The source path has changed, and BIT now sees that the whole source is deleted, and at the same time a new directory with sub-stuffs were created. Is there any settings or trick with which I could change the source to make BIT 'believe' that it is still the same material as it was on the old path? The settings in 'Where to save snapshots' would change only the location of the backup, but my problem is with the location of the source. I guess if I change the path in the Include settings, the problem is the same: the new path would be a different path with different files.

Thank you again

Ah, okay. Sorry I misunderstood your question. If your source path has changed my last answer is wrong.

You can manually duplicate your last snapshot into a temporary new snapshot ('cp -alR /path/to/backintime/HOST/USER/1/201301001-230501-984 /path/to/backintime/HOST/USER/1/20131007-184501-000'), move the files and folders inside this new snapshot so they match with your new source path (you can do this in Nautilus) and create a new snapshot with Backintime. After that is finished you can delete the temporary snapshot with Backintime. This way all files should be hard-linked to the old snapshots.
