Kickstarter

Asked by ML

Hi,

maybe it would be nice to start a campaign at kickstarter (or else) for speed up varios improvements and getting publicity. I like BIT, but it looks still a bit incomplete.

regards Martin

Hi Martin,

What exactly would you like to see in BIT? Have you already noticed recent changes (http://backintime.le-web.org/change-log/)?

Best Regards,
Germar

Hi,

I hope I'm not asuming to much but, if I : Sorry! This is only a suggestion! BIT is great, but it can get much better!

-I't would be cool if BackInTime were usable as a better TimeMashine. If you plugin your BackupDisk (or whatever) It should be automatic save all the changed files. Additional is the integration in Nautilus missing. Myself don't need this, but It would be real cool for inexperienced users.

-According to this automatic integration in Crontab is interesting.

-Additional are some of the OptionDialogPanels a bit overloaded or complicated, maybe one expert/or "crazy options" panel will help.

-There are missing easy ways to backup from/to ftp/Clouds

No worries. Suggestions and improvements are always very welcome!

(1) starting backups when the destination comes available would be a nice feature. I'll keep that in mind.
Once there was a Nautilus-Actions integration. Don't know if that still works but I'll also have a look on that.

(2) BIT already creates crontab entrys if you schedule a profile.

(3) The settings dialog has somehow 'grown' over years. Some GUI improvements and resorting would be good, that's right.

(4) Together with the SSH mode I created a framework for mounting. For now there is only the SSH mode and encfs (for encryption) will come with the next version. Further 'backends' are planed even if I wouldn't prefer FTP/CIFS/NFS/... because syncing to a local mounted network share will create a massive bandwidth overhead compared with rsyncs delta sync that is used by SSH mode.

I'm not sure about Kickstarter. But there is also a donate button on the webpage. That could at least help Dan to cover the cost for the server.

the Problem with (2) is that (if i'm right) crontab only works if the Computer is running.
with(4) your right, but for smaller things less a few GB It doesn't matter.

I think the problem with the donate button is that there is no real attention for spend money. And it's still a lot of work to do. Kickstarter is no must-have, but a bit more attention will be cool. Thanks for your time.

(2) can be done with anacron.

I'm not sure if bundling a amount of money to a special task would help either. It's more a problem of getting developers than to motivate them with money to write code. I joined BIT-Team last year and since than it was only Dan and me who worked on BIT and AFAIK Dan is quite busy.
I for my self wouldn't take money for working on BIT. I just do this for fun and cause I'm a happy user who missed some things in BIT (exactly like you do). My profession is completely different.

Sure, getting more attention would be great and maybe such a crowdfunding could help. I've no experience with those.
