What could have caused this error and how to avoid it?

Which filesystem do you use on the target drive? It looks like it doesn't support symlinks.
You can use 'Copy links' in 'Expert Options' for a workaround. 'Copy links' will make rsync to copy the linked file instead of the link. So this will waste some space because the linked files are backed up twice but if you can't reformat your drive with a filesystem that supports symlinks (e.g. ext3) this might be an option.

This makes sense. The drive indeed is Windows formatted.
I am going to switch to ext3.
