Restoring from old Back In Time images

Asked by Karl Speer

I recently had to reinstall my operating system. I had been using Back In Time to make regular backups for just such an event. Now that I have reinstalled the operating system and Back In Time, it seems to refuse to recognize all the snapshots that I have stored on my external drive. Is BIT even able to recognize those snapshots? Does it only recognize snapshots that this instance of the program has taken?

Hi Karl,
you can copy the config file from your last snapshot to '~/config/backintime/config' to bring back all your previous settings. If you changed the name of your computer or your username you have to deactivate 'Auto Host/User/Profile Id' under 'Advanced' and fill in the old names.
After this your old snapshots should show up.

Germar

It seems my backups do not have a backintime config file? I should clarify: I was not backing up my entire system, but only my multimedia database.

Nevermind, it was the autohosting (silly capitalization differences). Changed that, now everything is good. Thanks!
