Local directory backup instructions

Would it be possible to have the backup software look in each directory for local .backuprc files that would
give patterns for local inclusion or exclusion of subdirectories?
This would make it easy to have directories with code (that we want to archive) and huge data (that we don't want to backup) when working with huge sets of data.
Renaming data directories to 'data-nobackup' and adding regexp is quite suboptimal, and since my data directories change alot, adding them manually to a global (not local) exclusion file is cumbersome
