no snapshot of mutimedia files when metadata tags change

Asked by Andi

Hi All!

I was just playing around with Back in Time and noted something strange: When having multimedia (mp3, ogg, ...) files in a directory which is backed up a new snapshot is NOT created when the metadata (Artist, Album, ...) changes. I regularly create multimedia files which have no tags at first and add the metadata tags later. BiT will not include the files with the changed tags in the next snapshot but will keep the old version. Is this wanted behavior? I would rather like if BiT would backup the changes, even if it is a bit of disc space waste (in case that delta encoding does not work here...) Sometimes it is a lot of work to get the metadata tags the way I like them, and I would really like to get them backed up in the latest version.

Btw: I thought BiT uses rsync which in turn uses hashes to determine if a file was changed? If I change the the metadata, the md5sum definitely changes as well. So why does BiT take no action then??

Thanks for any advice, and thank you for this great little tool!!

Hi all again,

I have found a workaround: It seems that my tagging (easytag) program does not change the timestamp of the file when modifying the meta data. You can force a backup by Back in Time by updating the timestamp manually using the touch utility. It's a bit of a kludge, but it works.

But one of my questions remains: Doesn't BiT use hashes to determine if a file has been changed?? If not: Why not?

Andri

Hi Andi,

By deafult rsync use size & modification date (quick check). I can add an option to use checksum (but it can be really slower).
I'll open a bug for this.

Dan

Hi Dan!

Thanks for your reply! And also thank you for opening a bug! Although my workaround works for me it would be really nice to have the checksum option. Looking forward to the next version of Back in Time!!!

Yours,
Andi

PS: I will set this thread to 'solved' even if the new option is not yet available! Thanks for the help!
