window previews?

I would like to be able to access a screenshot of the last state of the window before it was minimised, when it is minimised. e.g.

I minimise thunderbird and when I hover over the icon I can view a preview (like the compiz preview while it is still maximised) of the window.

It would be ideal if this was live, i.e. I could check if the inbox had new email y hovering over the icon, or check on downloads in the minimised window... etc.

Is this possible?

It is not technically possible to to have a live preview of a minimized application (essentially the window doesn't get rendered... which makes sense from a efficiency perspective).

It is technically possible to grab an image of a window before it is minimized and use this in whatever way one could envisage. And it is possible that at some point such a feature might make its way into the awn taskmanager. Though I don't think it is a high priority for any of the devs.

Can you help with this problem?
