What you're trying to do is build from source. This requires a development environment, including a C compiler (i.e., gcc). However, for Ubuntu users, we recommend that they use one of the package repositories available for Ubuntu users:

http://wiki.awn-project.org/DistributionGuides#Testing_Package_Archive

Follow the Quick Installation guide carefully and you should have Awn installed.

I cannot use the repos as I am behind a MS ISA proxy that for some reason only lets Mozilla through and to fulfil all the dependecies takes ages and for some reason I cannot install two as they require the other to be installed to install. Unless I am stupid and this package has all the dependecies?

Well, either way (either via the repository or from source), you're going to have to install several dependencies - I would say that from source, you'd have to install even more dependencies, due to the number of -devel packages that you have to install.

Can you help with this problem?
