Sorry for the simple question but I have tried myself but can't find how to do it

I have loaded some applets and they have shadows so now it looks like 2 icons

How can I turn this shadow off or reduce it

Try opening the dock preferences, in the "Bar Appearance" tab set icon offset to 0.

If that doesn't work, make sure you're not running two instances of the dock.

Awn is not really meant to co-exist with a bottom (centered) taskbar. I don't think there is currently a way to change that. You could try unchecking the "Keep below maximized windows when not in use" option in the "General" tab, under "Bar behaviour".

(Note: these instructions may not be entirely accurate in wording, because I don't run a Gnome desktop.)

To remove the bottom task bar, you right-click the task bar in an "empty" area and select "Remove Panel".

If that doesn't work, go into System -> Preferences -> Session and remove gnome-panel from your session, then try the above action again.
