Error: Screen isn't composited. Please run compiz (-fusion) or another compositing manager.

This is not indicative of a bug, but rather a problem with your desktop setup.

It appears that you aren't running a compositing manager. Please read the installation wiki page to see which compositing manager would best suit your system:

I believe I am running a composite manager - compiz fusion. (which will lead to my next question.)
Could it be the compiz fusion changed my iconrc? and that is why awn doesn't work? Next question possibly in relation - how to get the desktop cube to work - ? no results.
thankyou

You probably need to make sure that compositing has been enabled and/or your video card supports it. There are several links in my previous post's link which describes methods of enabling compositing (AKA desktop effects) support for your particular distribution (the XGL/AIGLX links).

> Could it be the compiz fusion changed my iconrc?

I have no idea, as I don't run Compiz Fusion, but it's unlikely.

> and that is why awn doesn't work?

Again, most likely no.

> how to get the desktop cube to work - ? no results.

Sorry, but this is out of the scope of questions regarding Awn. You'll have better luck at the Compiz Fusion forums:

hi mark...

his Is a article about like ...2 years ago, but i had the same issue as you mentoined here... and got the answer..it was kinda stupid though :-p

first of all, there is nothing missing at your system. If you have compiz (or another window composition manager), the (propiertary) drivers for your videocard, and just the stable release of AWN, you're good.

The problem is not that compiz is or isn't installed, but if it's actually called upon by your window manager.

I'll explain: i'm running ubuntu 9.10 64 bit on a Nvidia GTS 250 and compiz.
First i used the standard level of desktop effects available in Gnome (wich is normal).
After a night being druk i decided to reduce the usage of desktop effects to almost nothing... in the idea to fine tweak the desktop effects to my pleasure. anyways, when you choose "appearance" in your systems menu, under preferences, you will find a tab called "visual effects". There i have set the desktop effects to "none".

it's ehre when everything whent wrong.

As no desktop effects are selected...your window manager is smart enough to NOT LOAD the window compositioning manager (as it is not needed, so why then?) in great contrast to other popular operating systems (mickeysoft!! ...ow, i meant microsoft), Thus compiz isn't loaded on desktop startup.

As compiz does not load, everything that depends on it fails to start, thus, giving the error when starting AWN.

to FIX this, just go back to the visual effects window and set the desktop effects to "normal"... the window manager should look automatically search for available hardware drivers for video, and , once found, it just reloads nicely and...oh LOOK! AWN IS BACK!!!

Might not help much 2 years after date...but can be useful if you find same error again

Can you help with this problem?
