Why not stable ?

Asked by Mateusz Kaduk

Hi,
I would like to know, what is a point in releasing a stable version while it is not ?
I suggest better testing before marking something stable and keeping not working version on svn.
I tried to install it on debian, satisfied all dependences but I cant start awn-manager.
Looks like gconf schema hasn't been installed this is a serious bug, which should not happen in stable releases.

This seems to be more of a rhetorical question, given that you already have an answer for it. Assuming this is not a rhetorical question, the answer is that Awn is still a very long way from the magical "1.0" status. It is "stable" in the sense that a number of people (usually from awn-core and testers on the forums) have tested a development version and verified that it works for them, so it was released. This project is made up solely of volunteers; no developer that I know of is being paid to work on this project. We (the community) try very hard to report and fix bugs as they come in, but this is all done in our spare time.

By the way, Awn uses bzr now, not svn.

For reference, here's a list of all the dependencies needed for Awn:
http://wiki.awn-project.org/index.php?title=InstallingFromSource#Debian-based_distros_.28including_Ubuntu.29
When you have confirmed that all of these are installed and awn-manager still doesn't work (after you start Awn first), run Awn from the command line and copy/paste any output it prints in the terminal here.
Many more questions can be answered in the FAQ:

I've already answered this question in the bug you commented on (bug #144310).

Thanks for trying out Awn!
