AWN on Ubuntu 12.04 - Launcher/Taskmaster Applet

I use AWM on Ubuntu11.04. As I start my testing to move to 12.04 I noticed a behaviour change. The Launcher/Taskmaster applet does not show on 11.04. Whereas, on 12.04 it shows as a green cross on the dock. If I add a launcher to the dock it disappears. But, a log out/in will show the cross again.

I'm also seeing the same behavior on 12.04. Would like to eliminate the green plus sign.

Got the same bug, tested 12.04 with AWN in a VirtualMachine, if I move an app to the + sign it disappears

Howver, if you log out and then back in the green plus sign is again visible.

Same issue for me on Mint. Linked an existing bug to this question. Currently no permanent workaround.
