Extremely low performance

Asked by rafael condidorio

Hello,
I've installed AWN and the performance in my computer is extremely low compared to other docks such as cairo-dock, however the AWN is the most easy one to config and has the features I was wishing for. Every icon effect but simple and none makes the processor reaches almost 90% on both cores and even with the simple effects all applications (such as Evolution, Chromiun, Nautilus, etc) work incredibly slow compared when using other dock app. I really would like to use AWN, but the actual behavior makes it impossible to work with.

These are my notebook configuration:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2Ghz
RAM: 4GB 667Mhz
Graphics card: NVIDIA 8400GS 128MB dedicated (totally offboard)
HDD: 320GB 7,200RPM
OS: Ubuntu 10.10 64bits with Compiz (extra Visual Effects) and Emerald

I have downloaded AWN from the original repository provided by Ubuntu Central Program and Synaptic.

Thank you for any help provided.

Please make sure you're using correct graphics driver, for nvidia that would be their propertiary driver version 180 or later.

Thank you for your answer. I'm not at home this moment, however I can asure
you that the nvidia drivers are current (180 or above, I just do not
remember the version installed). I will try to reinstall the drivers, but
not sure if this would work.

If reinstalling the Nvidia drivers doesn't have any effect could you please try testing with Metacity or xfwm with composite enabled?

I couldn't believe that reinstalling NVIDIA drivers would solve the
problem. In fact, since the driver was working fine my suspiciuos did
not lay on it, however, the driver did was the problem. Perhaps the
installing AWN before installing the latest NVIDIA driver caused the app
misbehavior. Anyway, thank you all for the tips and time to reply my
question. I will mark this issue as solved.

I was using NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260-19-36 driver. Reinstalling the package solved the problem. Shame on me.
