Bash error trying to compile AWN

When I put:

$ bzr co http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~awn-core/awn/trunk avant-window-navigator

into the terminal it outputs:

bash: $: command not found

What am I doing wrong? Do I need to add repositories or something?

Remove the $-sign from the command you put into the terminal.
