Are tere any facilities for an application to better integrate with AWN (report state/progress, etc.)?

Developing a desktop application (not an AWN applet) of my own, how can I better integrate it with AWN? For example are there means for an application to provide information on its state, so that an AWN launcher icon could show the application's state (like Windows 7 panel does, for example)?
