Awn

When I open AWN I get a rather big black bar on the bottem of my screen

It covers the entire bottom of my screen. When I go into Avant Preferences to change the appearance nothing ever changes. Any help would be much appreciated.

Do you have a composite manager like Beryl or Compiz? Awn requires one and doesn't work without it.

I did not have ether installed. I did install Compiz and it did worked. What do you think is better Beryl or Compiz?

it is up to you. Beryl is re-merging with compiz anyway, and in ubuntu 7.10 compiz will be activated by default if your video card supports it.

It's a matter of one's personal preferences. I like Compiz Fusion (not the same as "pure" Compiz), because it contains lots of bleeding stuff (aka more eye candy). It's under heavy development, however, and may be unstable. Beryl doesn't have as much eye candy as Compiz Fusion, but it's more stable. "Pure" Compiz is the most stable but not as feature rich as the others when it comes to eye candy.
