Awn

Nearly all themes reported as incompatible

Asked by Fred

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, installed via Synaptic, installed version 0.3.9.1.1~bzr638-1.9.10 from the PPA enabled in Ubuntu Tweak, and running within a Gnome session.
Graphics, if it matters, are an nVidia GeForce FX 5200 using the proprietary 173 version driver.

Right. With the obligatory bumph out the way...
I've been trying to get some themes to install, and with the exception of Shiki-Colors-Dock (Rounded) 1.2 (From Gnome-look), the Dock settings reports them all back as incompatible.
The ones I'm trying to install are all also from Gnome look, the Amber, Greenrock and Art of Dack Cappuccino themes.
I also extracted the Mac4Lin AWN theme from the main pack of it, and it too is also apparently incompatible.

I tried manually installing Amber (opening a root owned thunar, and copying the files, renaming the files from theme.* to amber.*) but to no avail.

And that's pretty much all there is I can say. Those are the themes I've tried to installed, it tells me they're incompatible, and I can't see anything that explains why.

That's because the themes you're trying were written for Awn version 0.3.2 or earlier, you'll need to nag the devs on gnome-look to update them. For now 0.3.9/0.4.0 compatible themes are at http://www.planetblur.org/hosted/awnforum/index.php?shard=forum&action=g_reply&ID=2330&page=1&isLive=true

You really should use later version if you want to use Awn, there are serious issues with this ancient driver.

Thanks Michal Hruby, that solved my question.

I wasn't aware of that, thanks.

Jockey recommended it when I first (re)installed Karmic on here, I tend not to go against it's suggestions.
Given the graphics card I have though, without using nouveau (as I understand it's 3D support is temperamental at best) is there any better recommendation for the card?
(PS: Sorry for OT here.)

I see, 180 and later drivers do not support GF5200... Well that's pretty bad, but you can't do much about it besides nouveau. But maybe you'll be lucky and won't notice any artifacts. :)
