Owning a authpuppy server

Asked by Andrei

Since authpuppy work with established authentication server like auth.ilesansfil.org for example, there is no need to have a local server as long as we use ubiquiti being flashed his sdk using wifidog.conf containing auth.ilesansfil.org lines.

But as far as it is implemented as la local server, there is no way to reach a local server with a ubiquiti device being flash with the regular ways. We need to have a special implementation where the authentication server is our own server.

So how can a local server can be reach in a way where everything is managed without the need of an external server. I mean my server have is own local ip adress, there is a router link to it giving it internet access. My ubiquiti device is attached to my router as an access point. It has been flashed with my own domain name wich is libresansfil.org pointing to my wan ip adress.

But so far so good, there is no ways to access my server.

So there is surely more to do, not especially on the ubiquiti device but in the server itself making it availaable to have a decent connection to. It's hard to explain but how come it don't work accessing our own server even from outside. It worked with DD-WRT, but with the great help of Jackson yes it was working in the way it use to be.

But in my case, and i ask this question cause i'm surely not the only one, i simply want to have access to my authentication server with a ubiquiti router, access point instead of using DD-WRT.

Is there something particular to do ?

Why can't you reach your server? Does the router say anything at all? What does it do when you connect to your access point and try to browse somewhere?

And what image are you using on your ubiquiti products? Your own compilation of Airos or openwrt. It may be just a configuration problem. For ubiquiti products, unless you really need the tools provided by Airos, try installing openwrt which is really easier to configure/debug.

Hi Geneviève,

I use the image made with the sdk 5.3.3 from Ubiquiti. I follow the procedure explain in this link : http://dev.wifidog.org/wiki/doc/install/airos and i've been able to make a new Ubiquiti image.

Initially, with the help of Jackson, i've been able to make the whole process to have a make V=99 enabled and functionnal. But in my case i think the way i use authpuppy may be different from regular customers.

****By the way, it is important for me to say that i'm very very thankfull to Louis-Eugène Jackson who was more than an excellent guide. He was someone very very helpful for me and i want to thank him publically again for his professionnalism, the time he shared with me, and for his great kindness and the sense of sharing he have. I have my best regards to Jackson. ******

The files i get at the end of a make world V=99 was :

fw-layout.txt
md5sums
openwrt-ar71xx-rootfs.tgz
openwrt-ar71xx-root.squashfs
openwrt-ar71xx-uImage.lzma
openwrt-ar71xx-vmlinux.bin
openwrt-ar71xx-vmlinux.elf
packages
XM.v5.3.3.sdk.9634.120818.1346.bin

The XML file was used to flash my Nanostation M2 ubiquiti device. There were no problem flashing it, but i was not able to reach my auth server. In a SSL Session i was able to navigate through the given files on my device and i saw the wifidog.conf as i configured it previously.

When i was with DD-WRT flashed router, everything worked fine. and as it supposed to be i had a login page, i was able to makie the login (splash or user name, password) and an automatic redirection was going on to a default internet page. I even have my remainng gigabit to use and other information while the connection was made.

So i thought that it was possible with a flashed XM....bin file containing a my own wifidog.conf, but in vain.

If there is a specific openwrt files that i can use to flash my ubiquiti antennas (i have two Nanostation M2 and two Nanostation loco m2) i would be happy to made them work. As long as there is a way to configure Wifidog in these Openwrt firmware.

So my question is : Can i use the openwrt-ar71xx-root.squashfs made by the build command make world V=99, this file is among thoes i had at the end of the compiled session. It took more than one hour the first time, but about 10 to 15 minutes after the first time.

And my second question is : If i use the openwrt-xxxxx file do i have something to make something more to access a configuration files or part, making it work with my authpuppy server ? ( a kind of wifidog configuration page or anything else for example).

Thanks in advance Geneviève.

Best regards,

André

As far as i have experienced flashing router with openwrt firmware, i know how unpredictable it can be.

Unpredictable as a wrong answer in this particular firmware, a wrong choosed option also, may lead to bricked (damaged) router. Bricking a Ubiquiti device is a big lost knowing that these devices are expensives.

So, my two question are :

Among the files resulting from the make world V=99 command, do i have to use the openwrt...squash files to flash my router ?

Finally, is there a way in Openwrt to make it work with Authpuppy (wifidog) ?

Thanks a lot,

André
