Authentication token manipulation error

I was given a computer that has ubuntu i guess on it and i am trying to download some things and i was looking around on some sites on how to do it and its asking me for a authentication password. I dont know it so im looking around again and i get to the terminal and it told me to type: Mount -o rw,remount / and it said not mounted or bad option. So i stard looking around how to change the password and it said to do: passwd(user) and i typed in another password and led me to (passwd): Authentication token manipulation error (passwd) Password unchanged. I need help

If you do not know the password of the user any more, then you can define a new one with the procedure described in

You need to start the computer with advanced options - recovery mode - root command prompt
