Ubuntu 10.04 is not supporting to install any software

Hello All ,
                I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 from past 1 year but the ubuntu is not supporting to install any software ( ex :- browsers also ) , even i use apt command also . It is saying " Authentication is failed " .

              May i know the root cause for it ?
