This cannot be the complete output, there must be some more (different) messages after these.
One remark beforehand:
Ubuntu 12.04 is not supported any more unless you have paid for Extended Security Maintenance.

As I said - I get different outputs depending on the execution of the sudo apt-get update command - this one is from a different run which shows the errors mid flow with more output following it.
I am aware that 12.04 is not supported - I am trying to get aptik installed to allow me to do a backup before I upgrade to the latest LTS version.

If you want to receive help, you have to copy/paste the last lines of output, which show more details about the repositories that fail.
Why don't you provide the complete output?

I am at a loss to know what more info I can supply. I execute command line
sudo apt-get update > file.txt
The outputs I am supplying are the full outputs of the command

Maybe it is not written to sysout but to syserr

Does this error message indicate that I am missing files ? I will check my system for a precise folder to see if those packages are there .
Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and forgo doing a backup using Aptik and do a freah install of latest LTS version.

Maybe it is my fault and I am looking for debug information that did not exist on Ubuntu 12.04 yet, but can you please do the following:
Open a terminal or terminal window and issue the command
sudo apt-get update
and then select all input that you see (including the command prompt following the execution) and copy/paste into this question document.

Yes, that's the information I was waiting for. It gives details to the 404 error.
If you look at http://
You have to disable the PPA ppa:mc3man/
There are different ways to do that, either by unticking the respective entry in the "Software and Sources" setup dialogue, or by executing "sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:mc3man/
After doing this, there should not be any error message for the "sudo apt-get update" command any more.
The command "sudo apt-get-install aptik" will probably still fail with the "aptik : Depends: libgee-0.8-2 (>= 0.8.3) but it is not installable" error message.
As written in https:/
ppa:garhuy/precise might have the package that you need.

Hi Manfred
In terms of the original issue - removing the repository fixed that error , however when I reran apt-get update I obtained new errors related to duplicate entries.
I went ahead and tried to install Aptik and got the libgee error - tried suggestions from the last email but still hitting issues due to duplicates
W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://
W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
I am going to close this off as fixed - since removing that repository fixed initial issue - I will raise new request to resolve the duplicate entries if I cannot find solution on the forum - thanks for your help - learned a few new commands to help me provide better detail in the future

The "duplicates" issue should be easy to resolve:
I assume that a line similar to "deb http://
Try locating these entries and put a comment indicator ('#') to the beginning of one of them.

Hi Manfred,
I can see what needs done but although my account is administrator - I am not root - so unable to change any files to allow editing - tried chown /chmod but get asked for root password - tried the obvious ones of root and admin without success.

Ubuntu uses the sudo concept for restricting and allowing administrative actions.
By putting "sudo" (without quotes) in front of a command, the authorizations are temporarily switched to "root" rights. Each user who is defined as administrator is allowed to use sudo and thus can execute admin tasks without the need for logging in as root.
Whenever you execute a "sudo ..." command, you are asked to enter your own password as confirmation, and please note that when entering the password, you do not get any feedback (no echo, not even '*' placeholders).
What you need to do probably is executing the command
sudo gedit /etc/apt/
