Run a single instance

Asked by Emilien ARNAUD

Hi,

Is it possible to run a single instance of AppScale outside Xen and KVM ? I'd like to run some applications outside Google App Engine (for production), without the need to have a cloud back-end (not many users, not many bandwith) ?

The reason I could not use Google is that for security reasons the application is not connected to internet ...

Hope it's possible,
Thanks in advance for your answers,

Sincerely,

E. ARNAUD

Hello,
Yes, you can install AppScale on a physical machine. Just install Ubuntu Lucid first, followed by the AppScale build process.

Essentially its the same as creating an image, only in this case the OS is running on the physical machine. You can find instructions on how to set this up on our google code site: http://code.google.com/p/appscale/wiki/ImageSetupViaBzr

Make sure to use "Lucid" instead of Karmic wherever you see it, and use the 1.5.1 branch instead of the 1.5 branch.

Steps:
1. Install Lucid on a physical machine
2. Install AppScale from source using the 1.5.1 bzr repository
3. Install the AppScale tools from the 1.5.1 bzr repository
4. Specify your IP of your AppScale node in an ips.yaml file which is used by the AppScale tools

I am also trying to run AppScale on a single node -- a physical bare-metal install using an Intel-based PC and a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.04 on a blank HD. I followed all four steps noted above, using Lucid/10.04 and the git repository.

I can get to the point of running the appscale-run-instances command, but it hangs forever at "Please wait for the controller to finish pre-processing tasks." message.

The /var/log/appscale directory is completely empty.

Any suggestions?
