How to make the Ubuntu 12.04 desktop more lightweight and less annoying (with all he popups and their footprint)?

I suspect that the popups that new packages are available are not only annoying but also that the program that generates them is started every time a user session is started and has a footprint on the resources of the system (memory, CPU).
How to remove all this?
(And other annoying running propgrams and popups?)

Disabling the popups in the configuration seems no to be possible -- http://
So the simplest working solution must be removing the "update-manager" (as I've mentioned in the comments at http://
