KDE SNAP compatibility and xdg-desktop-portal version updates on LTS versions of Ubuntu

Asked by Thomas Schläppi

We are deploying a Qt based application using snap / snapcraft to our users. The recommended way of snapping qt applications is to use the kde-neon extension and to use desktop portals to access things outside the sandbox.

When the application is running on Ubuntu 18.04 or 20.04, the application is not working as expected (e.g. Open File dialogues do not work properly). This behavior has been fixed in the newest version of xdg-desktop-portal, but the LTS Versions of Ubuntu are stuck on old versions.

Only 10% of the users of our software have a working package of xdg-desktop-portal installed. This blocks us for releasing updated versions of our software or using new features (e.g. from newer QT versions).

Question: Is it planned to update this packages on Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04 LTS?

If you think that this problem is severe enough to justify a SRU, then please create a related bug report.
Ideally you could already add a patch to modify the version of xdg-desktop-portal in Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04 to correctly work with your packages.
